Negroni

It is probably accepted worldwide that it was created in Florence, in the early 20th century when the Italian Count Camillo Negroni asked the bartender to give a little more strength to his Americano: and the Negroni was born.

One of my favorite cocktails is the Negroni. It is probably accepted worldwide that it was created in Florence, in the early 20th century when the Italian Count Camillo Negroni asked the bartender to give a little more strength to his Americano. That happened at Bar Casoni, and the bartender replaced th usual club soda with gin and also added an orange peel instead of the lemon one and voilá: one of the great classics was born.

Over its 100-year history it has encouraged a lot of experimentation, always with Campati as the base, but changing gin for bourbon (called Boulevandier), or even triying different kinds of gin to get very interesting varieties. One of teh secrets to create your own personal and awesome Negroni recipe, is to find the right gin-vermouth combination that complements Campari’s flavors.

My favorite is the one I prepare myself at home, but have had some memorable ones out of home because I always use it as a “quality test” for the bars I visit. Here’s the recipe I use (as a matter of fact, I’m having one while I’m writing this):

Negroni

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce Campari
  • 1 ounce gin
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • Orange peel (for the garnish)

Preparation

  1. Add the Campari, gin and sweet vermouth to a mixing glass filled with ice, and stir until well-chilled.
  2. Strain into a glass filled with large ice cubes.
  3. Garnish with an orange peel.
  4. ¡Salute!
